Through the lens of water, an element that can warp, obscure or mirror our vision, I paint human figures in pursuit of clarity. I seek to shed light on the construction and evolution of an individual’s identity, and how one’s self-perception is instrumental in this endeavour. Water is fluid, absorbing elements of the environments it passes through; therefore, I use it as a symbol for the many influences in our minds that have shaped us in becoming who we are. How we discern from them what is nourishing and valuable and ultimately find clarity, is a process that I want to speak to. Particularly in our digital world, with incredible access to information, we are increasingly capable of accessing good personal and interpersonal resources. Unfortunately, this is also met with increasing ways of escaping ourselves and achieving instant satisfaction. It is through my art that I create a pause for myself, and invite the viewer to reflect on their own experience.
